At least we'll learn from it... right?

I will have to bring myself to admit that we just weren't good enough to beat Tottenham. Another daft defeat, a bit like when we lost to Sunderland and that Darren Bent chap...

We had no excuses. Both teams had suffered several injuries. The referee did nothing wrong, and there wasn't even a villain of the piece among the Tottenham players.

The introduction of Robin van Persie had an enormous impact, and it frustrates me that he was brought on in the 68th minute when he was clearly needed 10 minutes earlier, presumably held back to prevent another Gallas incident. Had he not come on, we would have passed it aimlessly around the outskirts of their third for a solid half-hour and achieved little; when he was brought on, we at last threatened to score.

Van Persie brought our play forward and helped to bring others into the game - most notably Theo Walcott after the winger had struggled to reach long through-balls from further back, and Nicklas Bendtner after he had been marked out of long periods of the game. The latter scored yet again and at least showed that he can still keep poaching in matches where he has been otherwise average. Van Persie himself came close with an exceptional chest-volley and an almost perfect free-kick, both of which were met with very good saves.

Samir Nasri was on the ball more often than it seemed but simply wasn't given the options, meaning that when Emmanuel Eboue or Tomas Rosicky received a decent enough pass they were then punished by Spurs for dallying or not finding space. He wasn't one of our worst performers last night and he worked hard, but Nasri and the other central players didn't click with each other and clearly he is, for the time being, more effective playing out wide.

We dominated possession, but our strength in going forward and playing the passing game seems utterly futile when each time we lose the ball we are thrown into disarray at the back. This team is constantly on the idiomatic brink but I don't think we will win silverware while our second choice in the holding role is Denilson, our back-up at centre-back is Mikael Silvestre and, of course, Manuel Almunia is in goal.

Denilson has never really turned up for a big game and was lacking last night; he sits too far up the pitch for someone who is among our slowest players, he doesn't look nearly as committed when tracking back as he is when helping with our build-up play (or, as was the case several times last night, trying to help but lightly tapping short passes to an opponent) and if he has any specialty other than long shots it surely isn't for defending. Mikael Silvestre was being mocked by people in my local who support Southampton and Stoke, and I doubt that he is giving us much more than we would get from the kind of centre-backs that Southampton face every week. Last night we saw little pace, little communication and little commitment, and the fact that he is one of few players in our team who can kind of mark an opponent is no reason to keep him on. Thomas Vermaelen wasn't outstanding in the first twenty minutes but he was stronger than Silvestre on all of those fronts, and he showed his tenacity again by throwing himself at an early shot like Didier Drogba to a soft piece of turf. Manuel Almunia made yet another big mistake and I'm struggling now to think of a game this season when he hasn't made one, whether it was punished or not. A weak punch, a slip, and a strange attempt at a save - he made a good block later on but an Arsenal goalkeeper should be making both the good saves and the easy saves.

The full-backs both had good games and Gael Clichy was one of the best players on the pitch, dominating the left flank. Bakary Sagna was mostly effective out wide against Gareth Bale, who has been exceptional lately, but it was his dreadful playground positioning that let Bale in for their second goal - an uncharacteristic yet unforgivable lapse in concentration. Sol Campbell was again the heart and soul of our team, certainly our strongest performer, and he simply didn't deserve to be on the losing side. He was screaming at his team-mates like a man possessed, muscling his opponents off the ball and doing everything a classic centre-back should do. He will begin to show his age eventually but after yet another strong performance I think he should be given a contract for next season.

Our midfield was unconvincing and Denilson wasn't the only one who disappointed. Abou Diaby was back to his former self, the player that 12 months ago span around the middle of the park in a daze and spilt possession. A couple of good dribbles were offset by several bad touches and weak passes which on another night could have been extremely destructive, and his body language said it all. Both Tomas Rosicky and Emmanuel Eboue were heavily involved and each had one or two moments of brilliance; however, they were ultimately inadequate going forward, and some strange decision-making cost us what would have led to two or three unmissable opportunities.

I won't go into too much depth regarding the Spurs team, but a few things were worth a mention. Gomes was superb and it actually came as something of a surprise when Bendtner scored following a series of world-class saves - full credit to him, the Brazilian deserved a clean sheet. Both Dawson and King were impressive, particularly the former, and I would hope that the success of Tottenham's defence this year has got Wenger thinking about his own options at the back. Danny Rose was generally decent and while it would be naive to think that he was one of their best players, he struck that shot as cleanly as they come and regardless of the goalkeeping it was an outstanding goal. Many Tottenham fans I know have said they were poor as a team, which was true to an extent, but at the back they were too strong for us.

Yes, it is annoying. The title has gone from being a slight possibility to a distant dream, but we have to push on and win our remaining (all winnable) fixtures, hoping at least that United will drop points against City this weekend and continue their poor run. Chelsea can't really blow it now, but every game still counts and the boys have to play for the points if not pride.

Second place would be a damn sight better than what most people were expecting this season - the same would go for third place - and the most important thing is that we should finish this season with Champions League qualification out of the way. When Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor were sold to the team tipped to knock us out of the top four, we were completely written off, but we ended up challenging Chelsea and United for the league title and it is clear that we have made genuine progress.

Let's learn from last night, strengthen up again in the summer, and start North London's next red decade.

  1. That's a fair evaluation of the game. But do you really think AW will ever learn? He doesn't think about our support players which is why our second string always, always loses. AW is a master at buying awesome players for the first team but don't plan for injuries. I'm not calling for his head at all but another AGM incident needs to get him thinking.

  2. As spurs fan I don't want Arsene to go- you play beautiful football- but its clear: either Arsene is stubborn as hell or he's psychological gone mad and swapped financial success for team success or he is hampered severely financially. All have known a goal keeper, centre back & quality striker were needed if you were to make impact on CL and PL. The class difference between you and barca was frightening since you are england's best passing team. Don't hound Arsene out!

  3. Good post. The problems I saw were that there wasn't the movement up front to make space and let the midfielders pass - and there wasn't the necessary chasing when we lost possession.
It turned quite exciting when RVP came on though - nice to see him walking again!

  4. We need the following this summer if we are to win anything next season.....

    1) a new set of thinkers in the management side.probly a new no.2 to arsene, anew defense coach and gk coach.why is that except rvp and cesc, no other player seems to be able to play with their "other" foot?why does aw wait until 67th minute in every match to sub, even when it is clear changes are needed on the pitch.

2)proper targets to AW.Be ruthless with him and hell be ruthless with the players who are so dumb sometimes that it is irritating.we cant speak of one player from this generation that would get into the invincibles in terms of consistency, urgency and talent( cesc, rvp, verma excluded)

3)get rid of deadwood-deni,almunia,silvestre,eduardo.bring in decent replacement.there is no sense of urgency in this lot, maybe they are too complacent like AW.

    4) new players-2 CBs, 1 gk,1 striker and 2 mfs.

    5) step up guys from the reserves-i hear nordveit, jet,
watt, barazite etc being good.they should be involved more in the first team.

    6) teams should have a majority of senoirs with a couple of youngsters than an entire team of youngsters, but these guys cant hide behind the age factor any longer.how old is bojan, messi?

Not bad article but seem to under estimate the Spurs side.Heres a few players who would walk into the Arsenal team if they decided that like Sol they were into homos.
    Gomes-miles better than Almunia
    Dawson
    King
    Lennon-Like Walcott but effective
Palacious-Thanks AW for giving him a trial and recommending him to Steve Bruce. What you wouldn't give for someone like him.
Modric-I am sure AW would like him he would fit the style of play.
Jermaine Defoe-Fox in the box player missing at the emirates
This is half a team so cant be that bad a team !
with a wink and a smile Arsene Wenger .................

  7. I totally agree. Diaby just didn't put the effort in and his body language said it all. He's no substatute for Song or Fabrigas by the distance Arsenal are behind Barca. He just wasn't interested and he jogged around the pitch as if it was a training session. For a guy who said he ddin't go on holiday last summer but spent it in the gym getting ready for the season, he sure forgot how to put a bit of effort in. Denilson, I thought, at least tried to get stuck in and he did at least want the ball, even if he didn't do anything with it.
What we really need is a holding midfielder who can do a job when Song is out or give Song some competition.

We lost, not because of idividual errors but because we didn't want it as much as the other team. We had more possession and had some great opportunities but it lacked the desire, as some of our players just weren't willing to give that extra ooomph to suport thier team mates.
If a few more of our players had the desire of Sol, we'd have all been smiling this morning.

    burst after laughing at the

decades. Put a sock in it,

    Don't think you will...

  12. No we will not learn anything. Doesn't Bale goal reminds you of that Barcelona goal. getting caught at the restart. Our players don't learn because their manager don't learn. He shows no since of urgency when they are playing bad, so why should they. He doesn't make timely substitutions. He does them at the same time every game and sometimes ends up taking off the wrong person. AW is good at scouting players, but I am not sure of his players management ability

  14. too much pressure on too few leaders/performers in our team, that's been our problem.

we need a bit more quality depth in key areas, and we'll be fine.

  15. No fighting spirit at all. Were they for a training session? You can not win a cup if you do not have the hunger and you don't fight. I think the the team plays to qualify for championship and entertain but not win a cup. I thought so.

  16. the idiots who say things like....'we should get +carlton cole (roddelga)+chamakh+melo+ireland+joe hart+2 good defenders-eduardo-rosicky-vela-eboue' (16:01) make me laugh.
Yeh i think spurs would be really good too if they got messi, rooney, ronaldo, iniesta, sergio ramos, kaka and some of the other best players in the world.....yeh that would be good......retard

  17. Arsenal fan here. Respect to Spurs - they lack our quality, but they wanted it more. (My guess: Chelsea will take them apart). But back to us: even without Gallas, Song, Fabregas, Arshavin and both Verrmaelen and Van Persie for most of the game, we dominated possession (2/3 to 1/3); we just didn't show the real desire or guts in the final third. First goal was a freak, second a naive defensive error, but on another day VP would have scored, Campbell's header would have gone in, and we would have come away with at least a point. No crisis - we have improved significantly this season - but yes, need four reliable strikers (VP, Bendtner, Chamakh + one other; bye bye Eduardo, Vela), another quality centre back, and a really soli defensive midfielder.

  18. Mymate,

You are having a laugh with all those players 'walking' into the Arsenal team.

Walcott is by far the better player than Lennon, he is suffering in the new Arsenal formation, more suited to a 442.

Dawson I admit good player and would be welcome after a good scrubbing with bleach.

King - please our physio is busy enough.

Palacios - Out of all the players I reckon he is exactly what we need.

Modric - Yeah he was brilliant wasn't he? Was he playing? Erm thanks but we have enough small players who don't really do much.

    Defoe? - WTF? Seriously?

  19. We need a clearout. Almunia, Eboue, Silvestre, Denilson and Bendtner are not good enough. We should be able to raise £20m-£25m for them.

Sign Seb Frey GK, Subotic CB, Melo CM and Dzeko CF

    1st XI:

    Frey
    Sagna
    Subotic
    Vermaelen
    Clichy
    Song
    Melo
    Fabregas
    Nasri/Arshavin
    van Persie
    Dzeko

Subotic, Melo and Dzeko bring strength down the spine and height to improve our ability at set pieces. The squad should then also be strong enough to survive injuries as the likes of Gibbs, Djourou, Campbell, Diaby, Ramsey, Walcott, Rosicky, Vela can fill in

  20. How convenient that 12.39's plan would be a huge success in Football Manager 2010 (yes I play it and I made similar changes and wouldn't you know I was unstoppable!). I am sick and tired of people using that game as some sort of high ground against Arsene.

Nik B has been awesome this season. What would we have done without him? I promise you if we transfer listed him another big team would sign him and he would eventually be a success. Fortunately Arsene will keep him which is the best thing for Bendtner's career - and he will be a world beater at Arsenal!

I say keep on Eboue, keep Almunia as a reserve. Silvestre has to go and Arsene should think long and hard about Denilson.

I do agree with the positions you want signings and we're not the only ones. But Chamakh will come in up front and first-choice GK will become one of the current reserves next season (like it or not)

  21. Did I hear you right? Bendtner has been awesome?
Scoring some important goals doesn't qualify you to be awesome. Bendtner is an average team player not an outright striker with a strong game winning mentality. His bigframe is very deceptive in that he gets bullied off the ball instead of bullying oponents. Look at Drogba his play is commensurate with his stature.

Let such uncommited players, Diaby inclusive,be shipped to teams that play to stay afloat in premiership.

Let players know that when you don Arsenal shirt you play with the zeal to seize the cherished cups.

  22. I think in all the myst of football hysteria we forget the players that have left Arsenal ove rthe past two seasons for bigger pay packets. So if you loose two players you can't bring that many more back in without loosseing the balance of the team. It's not just about brnging in...is it? ..it's about keeping hold. As for totenham well they played like a team with nothing to loose, and it was their world cup final, 5th spot is theirs I reckon!

The chances of wining silver ware next season look dim I must admit...with Man City attracting CL players. Unless....the money men move in which I think they are!!

  23. Arsenal need more to clear dead wood than buy a lot .But still 5 big signings are need 1)Frey
    2)Subotic
    3)Rodellga
    4)Melo
    5)hangeland
these are apart from chamakh who wud come free.Players that should be sold are Eboue,Eduardo,Rosicky,Silvestre,.

  24. 14.04 I have never played Football Manager 2010. The players I listed to buy are established quality players. I would imagine the likes of Buffon, Sneijder, Iniesta, Messi, Torres, Villa and Rooney are pretty good on Football Manager 2010 too. Doesn't mean they wouldn't improve our side........
